A victory at Labour conference

The right-wing “Border Security” composite was withdrawn in the debate at Labour conference today, 24 Sep.

The unstated reason will be that the apparatus feared a defeat. After a flurry of campaigning by the Labour Campaign for Free Movement and Labour Left Internationalists, Unison, Unite, CWU and FBU were set to vote against.

Of course Labour government policy continues bad. But the leadership has at least been forced to concede that it can’t get conference to endorse the policy.

The whole left backed the push back against the motion unfriendly to asylum-seekers. Momentum had no perceptible presence at conference today or yesterday, but CLPD’s Yellow Pages bulletin for 24 Sep led on the issue.

But it has to be said that as LCFM and LLI started campaigning, the first reaction of many leftists was “of course we must oppose. But it will go through”.

The mighty are mighty only as long as we are on our knees.
